What a great year for movies! As I mulled over what films I wanted to discuss for my annual writing duties, I was truly torn to narrow down the choices from 20 to 15 to the eventual list below. We saw everything the past twelve months from the newest technologies such as digital de-aging to the oldest styles where filmmakers used 100 year old cameras for their work. With so many joyful cinematic experiences added to the ol' mind palace, I feel compelled to share some of the other films which almost made the list.

Some standout performances this year included Tom Hanks' transformation into the beloved Mr. Rogers for A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Taron Egerton delivered Rocketman to the screen in a visually delightful musical every bit as electric as Elton John's songs. Head and shoulders above the crowd for me though, was Paul Walter Hauser in Clint Eastwood's Richard Jewell which is perhaps the most impressive performance I saw this year.

Some industry and fan favorites didn't make the cut this year as well. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was good but a bit exhausting in length and by-the-numbers for Tarantino. Avengers: Endgame was wholly entertaining but suffers the same fatigue of too long of a runtime and just not living up to Avengers: Infinity War. 1917 is a visual masterpiece but offered little else in the way of distinguishing itself from the many war movies which precede it.

Movies which were better than they should have been: Hustlers, Good Boys, Ford v Ferrari, It Chapter Two, Dark Waters, Deadwood: The Movie, Booksmart, and Motherless Brooklyn.

Movies which were worse than they should have been: Dark Phoenix, Us, Ad Astra, The Dead Don't Die, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Terminator: Dark Fate.

Year after year, movies continue to take me to places I've never been. It's one our great escapes; an artform which wields the power to seize all of our senses at once. The tradition of sharing my Top 10 favorite films is something I look forward to year-round, keeping a little list of everything new I've had the chance to watch. Drawing from that pool of new cinematic treats, I get to talk about some of my new favorite experiences and share the places they took me.

Cinema pushes the bounds of our imagination. Being a visual artist, I find movies flex my mind and take me to new worlds. Whether at home on the couch or in a theater, we can be inspired. Each year, I share my own Top 10 Movies of the Year to indulge my cinephile obsessions and express my opinions, hopefully turning you on to something cool to watch in the process. This year, it was REALLY difficult to choose my favorite movies. There were some really fun (and some lackluster) blockbusters over the summer, plenty of clever low-budget indies, and now a stellar line-up of films highlighting awards season.

I never thought I'd say this, but I'm feeling some comic movie fatigue now. Warner / DC released a solid Wonder Woman movie which was a world-wide success but offered no real surprises. The much-anticipated Justice League really missed the mark with an uneven tone and a post-production hatchet-job which turned a dark, ambitious Zack Snyder project into the softball abomination Joss Whedon limped to the finish line with. Marvel Studios produced a couple of entertaining, albeit by-the-numbers movies with Guardians 2 and Thor 3 (which went goofy by trying to replicate the space opera tone of Guardians). Fox won out this year though with James Mangold's Logan. It was a much needed breath of fresh air, playing out like a post-apocalyptic Western.

Where I certainly don't feel let down is with the continuing Science Fiction renaissance of the past several years. You'll see a few of these in my list but others are worth mentioning to get us started. New takes on old characters such as Kong: Skull Island were great. Samuel L Jackson is dynamite as Kong's antagonist (sans Captain Ahab). However, Universal's attempt at The Mummy jump-starting their own monster movie universe was dead on arrival. Though flawed, the Blade Runner 2049 and Alien: Covenent sequels were both true to their source material and some satisfying guilty pleasures. Mayhem, Colossal, and It Comes at Night are smaller-budget gems with sci-fi roots which show what great things can be done with acting, a solid story and minimal effects.

With political times, come timely political movies. With the American Press under fire more than ever before, Spielberg gave us The Post, which through the lens of one of the biggest stories of the 20th century highlights the importance of free and independent journalism. Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House (that's a mouthful- pun intended) tells the story of Deep Throat, the infamous informant whose information brought down the Nixon administration. It's worth noting that Liam Neeson gives one of his finest performances in the is film, which fell under the radar of the awards season. On the funnier side, Downsizing served a clever satire on sustainability and had me in stitches. Christopher Nolan never disappoints and managed to give a fresh take on the war genre with Dunkirk while Gary Oldman gives another legendary performance as Winston Churchill in The Darkest Hour. Lastly, I found Last Flag Flying to be a real gem of a movie with Lawrence Fishburne, Steve Carell, and Bryan Cranston playing Vietnam vets reunited for the funeral of Carrell's son, who was killed in the Middle East. The performances are poignant and deals with some heavy themes any military family could connect with.

Other films well worth the time invested were Jawbone, Brigsby Bear, I, Tonya, The Mountain Between Us, Free Fire, Catfight, Trainspotting 2, Wind River, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, Beatriz at Dinner, Gerald's Game, Baby Driver, and Buster's Mal Heart! Now on to the required viewing...
Being a big nerd, I watched NASA both before and after the Solar Eclipse passed over my hometown of Clarksville, TN. We are lucky enough to be twenty miles outside of ground zero for the longest period of totality during the coast-to-coast wave of awesomeness today! One of the interesting things I learned from the official broadcast was how NASA's earliest research of solar eclipse science comes from drawings. In the grand scheme of things, the camera is very much a modern invention. Inspired by the 18th and 19th century drawings shown on the air today, I took to the drawing table this afternoon to create a visionary depiction of my own solar experience!
The past few months, I've been really letting my art animal out at the easel here in my home studio. It felt good to get away from the confines of illustration and just experience the joy of art again. Over a decade ago, my first solo gallery exhibit was called Topsy-Turvy. All of the works of art I displayed were created from at least two different perspectives and could be hung in different directions to get a fresh take on the imagery. The work was fun and I created two bodies of work for exhibits in both 2006 and 2009. These new paintings are created with that style in mind, but with a much lower-brow tone. The paintings are all free-styled, and just paint spun to canvass from a liberated mind- pure automatism!

Enjoy these previews of the work and check them out in person if you're local! Topsy-Turvy III will be on display at The Roxy Regional Theatre here in Clarksville through the end of July! I'll be tabling in-person at the show during the Downtown Art Walk, this Thursday evening, July 6th! Drop by and see me there!
As a teenager, grunge music was a driving force in my life so it is sad to see the likes of Chris Cornell move on from our world. His music spoke to a generation and I have a feeling it will be around long after I'm gone as well. For today and until then, thanks Chris for your guiding voice. Today, I created a visionary portrait in memoriam and jammed out to some Soundgarden...

To me, listening to music is often done by putting on full albums. By listening to an artist's collection of music, it gives each song context. Often, this roots from the style of music which they were making at the particular time the record was produced. The very best binge-listening experiences come from a concept- a story which ties the entire record together. These albums with fully realized stories are referred to as concept albums. Something deeper is realized and told by the musician over the course of the tracks. Here are my personal favorites... click on the album names to read their stories and let me know about your own favorite concept albums in the comments section below!

Here in my hometown of Clarksville, TN, The Rivers and Spires Festival has become an annual tradition and one I'll always hold a fondness for. This year was to be it's 15th and final year, yet the remainder of the weekend was unfortunately cancelled due to inclement weather. It seems this is a sad note for the community to part ways on so I wanted to extend my own heartfelt thanks and goodbyes.

Rivers and Spires had been around a few years before I really got serious about art in my mid-twenties. The festival became a local event where I first broke through some barriers as far as finding ways to display my artwork to the public. I quickly found my work stuck out like a sore thumb, got funny looks, gasps, laughs, and eventually collectors who would seek me out and even become friends. At first, I started out sharing booth spaces with other artists and splitting the cost. This eventually gave me the courage to attend other art fairs outside town and now as of recent years, attend comic and horror conventions as well.

As I developed a relationship with our local festival, I also was honored to win their Poster Contest two consecutive years in 2010 and 2011. It was a cool feeling seeing my custom artwork displayed on billboards, fliers, t-shirts, and the official festival poster around town leading up to the event! It's an experience I'll never forget and one which gave me plenty of confidence in my abilities as a growing artist.

Rivers and Spires began as a celebration of a recently-rebuilt town after the 1999 tornado which destroyed much of Downtown Clarksville. Over the next couple of years, we'll see many more additions to the downtown area again. As we feel the swell of ever-expanding Nashville, the city grows and grows. I'm excited for the changes- a new downtown park which is about to break ground, a new arts center as the Roxy expands, and even a Barnes and Noble bookstore will all be here before we know it.

The ending of Rivers and Spires will be the passing of a torch to a new Clarksville and I'm hopeful for things to come! Many thanks to the entire event staff and every single local volunteer who offered their time to make Rivers and Spires a wonderful event each year (rain or shine)!

Happy 4/20 from DREGstudios! The past several weeks, I've been letting my mind bend and playing with paints like it's 2005 but today got me back to the drawing table! Movies take us all to different places and I for one enjoy the escape when I can grab a couple of hours, buckle up, and take a voyage which (more often than not) costs millions of dollars to create. Cinema is one of the reasons we live in the most magnificent time in the history of the arts. Each year, I compose my own Top 10 list of the films which I found to be my own favorites from the previous year. It's a way to share my love of film and hopefully give you some suggestions on what to watch when you too have a few hours and are ready to escape. Making my annual list is never short task. First I keep a running list throughout the year of the films which I think have a chance of winding up on this post. Mulling over these notations around Oscar season, I get to relive their impressions on me as I revisit them in my mind and decide which I'd like to write about. I always try to fit in a few I hope you haven't heard of, a few which may be awards contenders, and perhaps even a couple of summer blockbusters. Here are my favorite flicks of 2016...
Diego Rivera was a Mexican artist in the early 20th century and is one of my favorite painters. As both a sensual and political artist, he lay some of the footsteps which I aspire to follow on my own artistic journey. This illustration I created over the weekend was a passion project and reprieve from confines I've felt in my work as of late. The drawing is based on Rivera's "El Vendedor De Alcatraces" but with my visionary twist of course! Musing with this painting yesterday morning, I was inspired by the themes of devotion, accomplishment, burden, and strength.
The Native America Sioux Tribe along with protesters and now a fleet of military veterans have dug in and set up camp to protest the building the Dakota Access Pipeline in North Dakota. The site has become a cultural and political standoff which will be penned in history despite its outcome this week. The protest camp is schedule to be cleared in the coming week so the this fossil fuel pipeline may be completed and run under the Missouri River, which is the main water source for the Standing Rock Native American Reservation whose people began to protest months ago. Despite claims by Big Oil their pipelines don't leak, 185,000 miles of pipeline leak every single day in the United States.
For centuries, the Native American peoples have fought to protect their land. Their culture inherently understands the sacred balance between man and nature. A balance which has become terribly skewed the past century. A platform for alternative energy is decades overdue and Standing Rock today is Ground Zero for the issue at hand. This week I completed an illustration, simply titled as the cause, Stand with Standing Rock to help lend voice to this pinnacle fight for a culture, nature, and the future of energy in our county.
As protests continue in most major cities under the banner of Not My President, racial and sexist tensions have grown to a fever pitch. While the chant of "sore losers" goes on from the alt-right, the liberal-minded find ourselves dumbfounded by the lack of understanding amidst smug celebration. The quiet underbelly of conservative values is the embodiment of centuries-old racism and sexism. Not all Trump supporters condone or advocate the actions of folks birthed from this swamp. However, they don't condemn them either, nor does their Lord and Savior of all which is white pride. Trump's "win" has seemingly opened the door for many of his followers who feel they have "won" the right to not just be openly prejudice, sexist and xenophobic but to also channel this hatred into acts of violence and civil rights abuse.
Several weeks back, I illustrated The Donald as a suicide bomber in order to start a game via social media called Blow Up Trump! The little guy was soon given his own Instagram account which survived not 24 hours before being reported into obscurity by less-than-amused supporters of the real Donald Trump. I fought the good fight though and through the proper channels, got my little terrorist back online where he's wreaked havoc for the past six weeks or so! Election Day has finally arrived today and I wanted to share with you #BlowUpTrump's 10 GREATEST HITS! (As decided by the number of likes which they received on Instagram! Click HERE to see the FULL STREAM of posts on his account!
After living in Tennessee for over thirty years, I finally made a visit to Memphis this weekend! I was in good company with a ton of great artists for this year's Memphis Comic Expo. The headlining guest and artist was the legendary George Perez, who I had the privilege of meeting at the show. He's a class act and we all really enjoyed watching him give each attendee a genuine fan experience! He was the first and last person working both days setting an example for every young artist in his presence! Another new and growing convention, the weekend was a bit slow as far as foot-traffic making for a rough few weeks on the road lately but I'm not deterred. Next weekend I'll be back in Knoxville for the Halloween Fanboy Expo! More to come but for now here are some of the pictures from the fun-filled convention in Memphis...
When Aurora and I went down to Biloxi over the weekend, we were fortunate enough to be able to catch the sunset both nights of our trip at two separate beach spots! The first night after we finished setting up for Fear Fete and meeting up with a friend, we drove to Front Beach, which is in Ocean Springs where our hotel was located. Right on the coast, we had a magnificent view of the bridge which goes across the water to Biloxi. After a long day of convention work Saturday, we rushed across the street to the Biloxi Lighthouse where we watched the birds, the fishermen and another magnificent display of colors shining across the gulf! While postcard-worthy, the pictures just don't do mother nature justice.

Aurora and I drove down to Biloxi last weekend for Fear Fete, a horror movie and gaming convention! We really enjoyed having the weekend together on the Mississippi gulf coast but it was an adventure for sure. We dove into the gulf after setting up at the Convention Center Friday afternoon only to find there was a water contact warning because of flesh eating bacteria in the water! Fortunately, neither of us suffered any ill effects from dipping our toes into the murky black sands of Biloxi's waters!

Thanks to the awesome fans who came out for the show and gave us some love and ordered live drawings! Fear Fete is a new show here in the southeast and we'll look forward to seeing it grow in the coming years...

READ MORE!!! »DREGstudios!
