A Happy Little Hitler

"A Happy Little Hitler" inks on bristol
Adolf Hitler will forever be one of the most notorious faces and images of hate, evil, and racism to ever exist. In this recent illustration, I posed him painting on a canvas. Hitler's application to art school as a young man was infamously rejected. This fact has sparked trivial debate about whether World War II would have occurred had he been accepted.

Initially, I had my subject with the classic cold stare you see in photographs. My wife and I decided to opt for a smile to not only make the work less menacing but to give face to another side of him (the sick bastard had to smile sometime in his life, right?) For my photo reference of a painter, I used a picture of Bob Ross... which also inspired the work's title. The work is curtained at top and bottom with the flags of all the countries Hitler invaded, conquered, and controlled during his reign.

In my portrait, Hitler is painting an image I found in a real Nazi propaganda cartoon depicting The Giant Jew-Bug taking over the world. The Germans used cartoons as propaganda just as the Americans did even via Disney cartoons.

UPDATE 10/07/2010

Here is the thumbnail sketch of the original concept for my Happy Little Hitler. I found it rummaging around this morning and thought it was neat to compare. With more complex works such as this, I'll often do a couple of thumbnail sketches before I move on to my final sketch.

That is all I needed to read to know your site is just bogus BS spin and useless propaganda. You obviously know very little about Hitler. Good luck with your site. Bye!

  2. Soooooo, are you disagreeing that Hitler's reputation is notoriously associated with hate and racism? I don't believe I put a spin on this.

  3. Brandt, don't even be bothered by it.
I'm so annoyed that EVERY TIME Hitler is mentioned, there has to be at least one person who feels they have to come up with some kind of comment about how IF you REALLY knew or IF your were REALLY SMART you'd understand Hitler's genius.
The man could not understand the basic concept of not killing people just for fun or because they are different from you. That's an ignorant, pathetic, hateful asshole right there. I don't care how anyone tries to explain it.

  4. I couldn't agree with you more... I was afraid people would initially think I was defending him rather than making a satirical commentary on his madness. I never though anyone would come by defending him. Everyone has a fan club in today's warped world.... even me, right?

  7. Hitler was indeed a brilliant man, but sadly and shamefully he decided to use that intelligence and power against humanity.

Who knows what elements can truly change a person since every mind is its own little world, but i highly doubt he became was he did in his life based on his rejection from art school.

I do understand your point and humor behind it, and artistically speaking i think you did a magnificent job :).

As for the other comments, i think people really need to say things in a smart and respectful manner.

I think surviving WW1 after seeing your unit wiped out time and time again some how you survive would effect someone's psyche pretty deeply, don't you think?

I wonder how many men saw their units wiped out in WW1 in the trenches, or crossing "no man's land?" WW1 was horrible and brutal and untold thousands, hundreds of thousands experienced all of that. How many Hitlers came out of that? Oh, right: one. Funny freaking art, man. The Bob Ross-ism kills me.

    1. Happy Little Anonymous, I'm certain many men found themselves in dark places after such an experience as a World War, but had other means and motives for how they handled their lives afterwards. Thanks for seeing the commentary in the artwork.

any person can proclaim themselves a genius when they have a brute army at their beck and call. Any person. If you have tens of thousands of young men willing to take orders, you need no genius, just madness

    1. We are certainly at the mercy of the history books and press in regards to learning from the past. Hopefully with the power of the internet, we can have a better grasp of current events. Hitler was probably as bad as he's been described but we do have to take context into consideration. We don't demonize our own leaders for the sordid history of the near eradication of an entire race. Only in our case, it was the Native Americans rather than the Jews.

(...concerning North Korea, or fill in the blank) Oftentimes I wonder if rogue nations, small third world countries view the U.S. as being a country full of rich and powerful white guys that want to keep the rest of the world submissive to their own agendas. Much like they did to their very own, namely Native Americans and Blacks. Even our so called christian nation has a history of being not so righteous--and an abundance of equally corrupt little dictators.

    1. Thankfully for the most part, our system of government had kept us from experiencing true dictatorship however the World-view of the good ol' U.S. of A. is certainly tarnished considerable over the past twenty years as we've dug our dick deeper and deeper in the sands of the Middle East. In a dictatorship, the voice of the people isn't represented but neither are we represented in Capitalism. War profiteering is a powerful force and the main reason we've designated ourselves as the world's Police. Wall Street knows that policing is profitable. The parallels are frightening of how we've treated races in the past to how we treat foreign countries now, exploiting their labor and resources.

    2. And you think Socialism would represent "the people"? Ask all those people in the "People's Republic of ____" how they are represented. Capitalism is there for you to make what you will of it, you don't understand it, you get left behind. bye bye...

Adolf Hitler was an ultra-German-nationalist, much more than he was a 'racist'. Jews were considered to be natural enemies of German, and Jews were the only group considered to be natural enemies of Germany. Because any enemy of Germany was to be killed, Jews took the brunt of the punishment. But Bolsheviks (in Germany, Russia and eastern Europe) were also enemies of Germany and need to be killed too, so Hitler headed east to Russia to wage war. He never wanted war with France, the English Commonwealth or America, that came as a consequence of invading eastward from Germany. If you listen to Hitler's last radio broadcast (I believe in April 1945) he talked about the war as "the war between the East and the West", not at all a war as we think of it as a war between totalitarianism and democracy. Nazis and most Germans had a much different view of WWII, and race was not at all prominent in their view.

If race was the preeminent issue to Hitler, the Nazis and most Germans, Germany would have rounded up all the north Africans and Greeks and exterminated them too. But that didn't happen. Race was not the drive force, the driving force was Germany Uber Alles. Germany in WWII was a conquering nation, not much different than other conquering nations from history, except that Hitler was way over ambitious in his warring. Attacking Russia was a huge mistake, and because of that, the Hitler's Reich was much shorter than other conquerers.

Real history is different than what you hear on MSNBC.

So you say if Hitler had been accepted to the artist school, there might not have been war? I disagree. Although Hitler played a key role in triggering off the tensions, but he wasn't the one who created those tensions. Of course he was a very evil and sick person, but probably - with or without Hitler - the second world war was inevitable. On the other hand, his mental sickness made the word "war" interpreted on a pretty much different way than ever before.
Also, - you know - mentally healthy people don't start hate propaganda if they don't get admitted to a school. To be honest, mentally healthy people don't start a hate propaganda, whatever happens.

  16. I think Hitler's being denied admission to art school was the deep emotional trigger for his hate of Jews. His calling by God was aborted, by Jews. Think what a small kid would feel if they were making a magnificent something in their sandbox, and some mean person came along and smooshed it. Rage at the whoever, probably. The man was in deep psychic pain. I can understand this since I am a lifelong musician. I had the thought as a kid "I am put on earth to do music & it is holy". During the last few years having suffered incredible pain at not having places to play, and serve God, I can appreciate the tragedy of those who never found their calling or had it aborted. Everyone has a calling from God. Many never find it. I don't know which is worse - never finding it or finding it and having it stolen - like is it worse to never love or love and lose? pondering all this I wrote an article recently on my website
I understand Adolph - yes THAT Adolph

God recently provided a piano for me outside the NY Public library and I revived myself while praying for others, singing 5 songs. The 3rd is a prayer to be filled with the Holy Spirit. The bible says that anyone who asks for it will be given it. Jesus said unless we are born again, we cannot see the kingdom of God. Being born again means being filled with the Holy Spirit. God only gives it if we ask. The words are
Let your people be restored; fill us with your Spirit, Lord. I invite you to listen and sing along - ASK. God bless.

And the conquered countries - you missing one very important, the one the WWII started with in 1939 but probably you don't even know that such country exist. Next time please stick to your own country history as you're not a smallest part of this from the other side of the ocean.
