Living in a Society of Fear: Ten Years after 9/11

Terror ALERT (inks on bristol / 2011)
“Oceania had always been at war with Eastasia.” -  George Orwell, 1984

Will we always be at war with ourselves?

War is as old as man and as old as written and oral history.  War predates language and is in human nature to protect one’s own territory, land, family and as it is increasingly the case- assets and wealth.  9/11 evoked within America this territorial instinct to come together and protect their own.  Weeks after the tragedy, New York City and America displayed the single most touching show of unity and humanitarian compassion since much different generations of past World Wars.  However fleeting, something beautiful came from an atrocity.  There are powers which took advantage of this wave of emotion.  They channeled it into several forms of control over our own Civil Liberties and used it as a pretense for nearly a decade of a seemingly never-ending war.

On the morning after my 21st birthday at 8:46AM, the world changed forever.  When I awoke around 10AM, both towers of the World Trade Center had fallen and the college campus I was visiting was on lockdown and in hysterics.  Typical of the stages of grief and loss, anger swept our country when Al-Qaeda was immediately blamed for this National tragedy.  Paranoia struck, alerts were issued, people began being suspicious of things as harmless as their own mail.  Even worse, Muslim-American culture was impacted by mass suspicion and new-found racism.  Neighbors reported on neighbors and anyone suspicious.  Under the pretense of this mass hysteria, our Congress and President passed The Patriot Act a mere six weeks later (without the consent or vote of the American people.)

Recently, New York Magazine published an article about the Patriot Act’s usage to date.  Only 15 charges of terrorism were cited, as opposed to 122 counts of fraud and 1,618 drug charges.  Ironically, the 2nd result on my Google search for “Patriot Act” is from The United States Treasury’s website, which states “The purpose of the USA PATRIOT Act is to deter and punish terrorist acts in the United States and around the world, to enhance law enforcement investigatory tools, and other purposes.”  One certainty about business is that numbers don’t lie (and our country IS a business since Capitalism kicked Democracy out of bed in our lifetimes.) The Patriot Act was NEVER about terrorism.  Less than two months after the attacks of 9/11, the clamps were tightening on our changed country and our personal freedoms were already slipping away. This legislation eliminated check and balance from our law enforcement agencies and their capacity to monitor their own citizens creating an Orwellian police state.

The ACLU’s website states, “The Patriot Act vastly — and unconstitutionally — expanded the government’s authority to pry into people’s private lives with little or no evidence of wrongdoing. Years after its implementation, there is little evidence to demonstrate that the Patriot Act has made America more secure from terrorists. But there are many unfortunate examples that the government abused these authorities in ways that both violated the rights of innocent people and squandered precious security resources.”

Despite only being accountable for 1.5 terrorist charges per year since its initiation, on May 26th of this year, Congress passed four-year extensions on expiring provisions of The Patriot Act.  In July of this year, my own home state of Tennessee made it a Felony charge to post offensive images to the internet along with making even something as trivial as an offensive bumper sticker a fineable offense.   (Click HERE to see my artist’s response to this new legislation and my portrait of our Governor Bill Haslam, who signed the bill into law.) Our civil liberties and freedom of speech and expression are being squandered on FEAR.  Two-thirds of Americans say it's fitting to sacrifice some privacy and freedoms in the fight against terrorism, according to a poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.  The numbers just don’t add up:  over 200 million people are willing to sacrifice their Constitutional Rights to capture less than two terrorists a year?

“He loved Big Brother.” –George Orwell, 1984

FEAR (Report any Suspicious Activity) inks on bristol / 2011
If the plug was pulled on wireless communications and internet tomorrow, we’d realize within minutes just how isolated we’ve become in our Brave New World.  We’re jacked in through television and phones and computers constantly.  While societies such as Egypt very recently have risen up and organized against their governments through the help of avenues such as Twitter, our own government has adopted a kill switch for the internet.  Our President has nearly unchecked authority to pull the plug on most of public access to the World Wide Web.  In a country founded on Freedom of Speech and Assembly, legislation such as this is a very dangerous solution to hindering any sort of mass uprising against the powers that be.  This was the full intention of the Patriot Act- to enact a stranglehold on domestic affairs while wars are waged without the general public’s approval on the other side of the globe…

A year and a half after 9/11, the Bush Administration convinced Congress and leaders of a handful of other countries to invade Iraq on March 19, 2003.  In the past seven years, this pre-emptive occupation of The Middle East has led to hostile actions against nearly every country in the region and setting up permanent military operations.  9/11 wasn’t used as a catalyst of war, but of INVASION.  Death tolls for combined losses of Middle Eastern and American civilians and soldiers are estimated at well over 900,000.  Both leaders accused of crimes against their own people and our country- Osama Bin Laden and Sadam Hussein have both been executed, yet there is no end in sight.  Our Government and the Powers that Be have no intention of leaving the Middle East, having set up their pawns around most of the richest oil reserves in the world in anticipation of a Third World War over this finite resource which yields the power of transportation, mass production and all that goes with greasing the wheels of a doomed system of Capitalism.  All the while, the rich and powerful gain more riches and power by taxing themselves less due to Bush-era legislation.  These tax cuts and corporate tax cuts since 9/11 have eroded out economy to the brink of collapse.

You see the men in power ceased the greatest marketing scheme of all time by using our own fear against us after the most significant domestic attack in American history.   They sold our public representatives the pretense for foreign Invasions without the approval of the United Nations- wars which under the influence of capitalism grossly exploit War Profiteering by every aspect of its definition.   They use your fear against you to the point which you’re willing to let them spy on you while you hide in your home and censor yourself as to not be suspected of terrorist intentions yourself.  You live in a society of fear but you are not alone today and you won’t be tomorrow…

There IS a better way and with your voice and vote; you hold your public representatives accountable for their actions and decisions.  Speak out against spending your tax dollars on a hopeless occupation to control an out-dated energy source.  Insist your monetary contribution to the government but used to find alternative energy to get us past reliance on foreign oil and pork-barrel wars. More importantly, raise your voice against legislation which hinders our ability to communicate with absolute Freedom of Speech which outlined in the founding documents of our Country. Your VOICE is your RIGHT.  We are supposed to spread this message across the Globe but we must first reinforce our own ideals at home and TAKE BACK what was once guaranteed by our Constitution.

    1. You know what kills me about these close-minded Auto-Americans like this Anonymous.. they have no idea what being a true American means.

I fought for my country in the USN, and I fought for the rights in the Constitution. The original purpose of the US Government is so we can monitor what our leaders were doing and be part of something we agreed with... that's no longer the case.

Now the USGOV has turned into Big Brother and people are afraid of speaking their mind.. in fear of being called a terrorist or inciting disloyalty.. or worried about these ignorant Auto-Americans who have NO idea that their blind faith in the powers that be is actually THE one thing that is ruining our government. If we didn't have so many people who blindly did what they were told, maybe our country wouldn't have slipped so far, so fast.

  6. Kudos for pointing out the lives lost in wars since 9/11 far exceeds those lost on 9/11. We in the West often forget the terrible damage inflicted on Iraq and Afghanistan when thinking about the Twin Towers.

Oh sorry, I forgot about Pakistan, Libya and Palestine. Can we stop bombing now?

  13. Frightened Anonymous,

Something beautiful happened this past Saturday which reassured me and touched my life. A "first" occurred for the entire human race with the largest ever Global Protest through the #Occupy movement. This protest was a stand against corporate and government regulation of our lives and was organized through peace, solidarity and simple word of mouth. Just through the power of thought and speech, citizens took to the streets in over 900 cities spanning over 80 countries.

Without the power of the internet, mankind has never been able to communicate together as one until the past 20 years and more increasingly true in the past five years with social networking. This reassures me. All they can do is pull the plug on the internet to stop a truly democratic voice. What happens when they pull the plug? We found out in Egypt, EVERYONE takes to the street.

Internet Neutrality is an issue vital to the survival of any trace of Democracy in our society. We have to stand for it and drive a wedge between our government and big business to take our voice back in the political system. It's started and it may get scary, but the one thing you won't have to worry about is solidarity. 99% of the population want the same common things, we just don't realize it when we let ourselves to be forced to play their game.

They have already surrendered their Constitutional Rights and Civil Liberties in exchange to stay out of prison and/or minimize their prison sentences for their crimes. And now they are mere Terrorists/Enemy Combatants, as per the Patriot Act...the double-edge sword and the Constitution of the United States, committing COINTELPRO Terrorism, i.e. gang-stalking, against innocent Americans who are National Security Agency targets.

  17. I fear this new move on the NDAA bill 2012 is another piece in a very large puzzle. Our Society has made leaps and bounds since the inception of pivotal inventions around he turn of the 20th century and since the early 50's our society has been more and more controlled by a collection of few who hold power and money. this is not a conspiracy rant, merely an observation of factual evidence. I fear something massive and life altering to come over the next year. the powers to be have slowly numbed us and we let them because we like our Starbucks, warm houses and fat paychecks. OWS is the beginning of the revolt, watch as this new bill silences them and they continue to move forward.

  18. Cunning-linguist, thanks for being tuned in and giving me some positive feedback!

Chris, the ones pulling the strings behind the curtain can never have enough money or power. This is about domination and I fear for 2012 as much as the next person between the NDAA and the FEMA camps being staffed over the next few months, it looks like we're no longer the land of Free Speech. Dissidence will no longer be tolerated and only true revolt will bring about change. The FEMA camps are set to house nearly a couple of million people. How frightening is that?

  20. Though it will never fully come to pass at any time in history, the real answer to man's problem is Jesus Christ. However, just because He will not become the center of man's world, that doesn't mean we should not press toward the goal of making Him the center of our reality. My friends, there is not an ultimate answer outside of Jesus Christ. He holds within His power to create new world order within the fullest sense. Our Constitution will work. Don't be guilty of throwing the proverbial baby out with the bath water. It is the twisted, self-centered hearts and minds of fallen man that is the problem. Make the Consitution, according to how it was orginally written and intended, the centerpiece and goal in our struggles for a better America. But first of all, surrender your life to Jesus Christ. Through faith and obedience to His instructions there is a greater chance our Constitution will thrive and yields its fruit. Why? Two reasons: (1) God was involved in the establishment of our Constitution. (2) Because God promised He will be in the midst of our efforts working all things according to His will. His will is that we have life and have it more abundantly. See John 10:10. Generating more strife, as in the Arab Spring, will not suffice.

    May God bless you all.

P.S. I am not talking about religion. I am talking about having a Leader that knows all and is able and willing to help those that trust in Him. Read the gospel of John very closely and you will receive a greater understanding of this Leader.

  25. False Flag Anonymous,

This is a great question which I am surprised had not been asked until now. I forced myself to write several drafts of this article to get my point across in a way which wasn't laced with conspiracy theories to avoid alienating part of my audience. I think it is very important that we focus on the resulting reach of Big Brother after the events of 9/11 and our Government's use of the tragedy to distort the public's view of what legislation they are willing to let infringe upon their Civil Liberties in the name of defeating a potentially nonexistent threat of terrorism.

That being said, I feel that if any person informs themselves of the scientific facts surrounding all three 9/11 attacks, they will find there to be much more powerful forces behind the World Trade Center collapsing and the Pentagon being attacked than Muslims with box cutters. Personally, I draw the same conclusion as many "truthers" do- 9/11 was a False Flag Operation used as a pretense to create a stranglehold of fear on the public here in America and more importantly to set up a permanent military presence in the oldest and richest bed of natural resources in the world- The Middle East.

If any readers are interested in this theory, please inform yourself first by reading and watching. I was first drawn to this issue by my late friend, Ryan who sat me down to watch a documentary titled "9/11 In Plane Sight" back in 2004, which laid the groundwork for many brave documentaries which followed and dove deeper and deeper into the subject. Two excellent sources are Loose Change (http://www.loosechange911.com) and Zeitgeist (http://www.zeitgeistmovie.com).

Other than subliminal phrasing, I left most of the facts presented by these films from my article as my focus was on the Society of Fear created out of these attacks. Dear reader, please research these allegations for yourself before calling me a terrorist, a traitor, or a nutjob, which all truthers are constantly subject to. Ask yourself who gains to profit and seize power over the public from 9/11. Again, embrace the facts and the science behind the theories.

I know it's a frightening possibility which threatened my own sanity when I was exposed to it seven years ago. Lift the veil and accept that the powers that be behind the curtain in our country have an agenda. Bush and Obama are as much pawns on their board as these attacks were. The question now is how far they are willing to go to push war-profiteering beyond the reach of the terrorism scare. It used to be that pure rhetoric was enough to develop an arms race and Cold War through the 80's. It took an event of this magnitude to chill the public to the bone as to gain public approval of waging war with countries who pose no threat to us after the fall of Communism in Russia. America always needs an enemy... war profiteering is the most destructive spoke on the wheel of capitalism.

    1. This site and your comments are beautifully expressed. I have tried to use reason and facts to inform others of the truth behind 9/11 and the first WTC bombing in '93. Of course, none of my research is original and I owe it to others who became aware long before me. I did live through the nightmare of the JFK assassination, and the subsequent assassinations and attempted assassinations, the Gulf of Tonkin Lie, Watergate, the Iran-Contra Affair, The Savings and Loan ripoff of the middle class, the Enron ripoff of California, the Waco Massacre, The Oklahoma City Deception, the Kuwait incubator babies falsehood, 9/11, The Anthrax Inside Job, Jessica Lynch Propaganda Piece, the Osama fake video, The non-existent Weapons of Mass Destruction, the Valerie Plame CIA outing, the election frauds of 2000 and 2004, and breathed a sigh of relief when the Savior Obama beat McCain only to find now he was just another stalking horse for the 1%. While there's life there's hope. Thank you for your courage in posting this blog site. I agree that telling the unsuspecting the true story makes them think you're crazy, as they have been cleverly programmed to think. Still, I believe the NDAA may get through to many more. I will be carrying my sign "No trial = No Democracy" hoping some will remember what democracy means.

    2. You carry that sign for me too and I hope you continue in your own bravery and spirit of protest. That's a long list of atrocities and deception our government has wove with their blanket of war profiteering we are all being subjected to. The nightmare must end and we can only continue to raise our voices to help wake the American public up to what the powers that be have done to us.

  26. FiveDollaBill-

First off, thank you for your service to our country no matter the politics behind any war. I am also worried about the stability of our country.

You cannot blame Iran for unrest in the Middle East. America and Russia have funneled weapons into the hands of each and every country at war in the region for decades. They have never had the means to manufacture their own weapons. Rather, outside countries capitalize on a warring region which needs money to fight among themselves due to our own antagonizing by buying their oil and continually campaigning for war.

Despite defending our country, I think you may have lost sight of an important principle in the foundation of America. You say we need to "suspend the Constitution" in order to keep Muslim religion out of our country? This one of the most UNAmerican ideas you could spread in a free thought society. We have a separation of Church and State for a reason.

America can not be the World Police, that concept only makes dictators out of us. Research Pearl Harbor yourself and you'll find that as with Iran, we bullied Japan into attacking us. We placed similar sanctions on them as we are about to do to Iran and they retaliated pure and simple. This is explained in a great documentary, The Fog of War. Our President even gave the order to stand down and let the Japanese attack that day to allow a premise for entering the World War again.

I wholeheartedly agree with one thing you've said here - "Society has lived a champagne life on a beer budget for too long because of the self greed." Capitalism and a profiteering mentality has created this give me give me give me sense of entitlement and consumption which has wrecked our country with our abstract ideas of money and wealth. We must learn to live again without the want for more and more and more.

  30. Love the art. Saw your link from LA Times page.

Where does careful end and paranoid begin? That's really the question of the times..for me...sometimes. This thing called the Net is a great connector, but if the ptb is too threatened at any point, the plug will get pulled, or start getting pulled, here and there. I'm not talking surveillance, I'm talking outages and lack of access. It hasn't seemed to happen yet (except I found I couldn't tweet when the police were getting ready to bust up Occupy L.A. November 30th in the evening). But logically, net access will be chipped away if the net helps people too much to connect in ways that are seen as disturbing status quo. On the other hand, there are good people in lots of organizations who believe in freedom of speech and communication rights. So it all remains to be seen.

What they need is TWO internets. One controlled for banking purposes or to protect .Org and .EDU type websites.
No commercial sites allowed on the secure net.

Then another that's *open sourced* that's aka Wild Wild West style with only limited laws to protect consumers.

  39. Our best period was actually the 1800s and Turn Of The Ceuntry as people were slowly awakening to the controlling churches and learning about our universe.

Sadly the dark forces decided to try a different strategy and poked into the scientific community by slowly taking moral values out till all we have is a *Dead* universe where life has no meaning and our purpose is just mere survival.

The real kicker is when prayer was banned from schools but things have been slowly going on before that behind our backs to kick out moral values and instead impose a *Reward vs Punishment* system.

Then in the 50s it was decided to make everybody *equal* so if you received an A and didn't cheat which Johnny got an F then the grades are adjusted so YOU wind up getting a C and Johnny a D or maybe a *Pass* even though you studied hard for you're A.

This is only a small example of making everybody equal but poor.

    1. The Great Depression was orchestrated by the bankers behind the Federal Reserve. There were products gathering dust on the shelves because there was no money to pay for them. Those bankers purposely reduced the money supply after allowing people to purchase stocks by paying only 10% down. Then when the market crashed, they came looking for the 90% which hadn't been paid yet, knowing it was impossible for anybody to pay, so they confiscated their real tangible wealth (gold, homes, etc.). We're actually in a worse state financially than we were during the Great Depression. How many of us own our homes or feed ourselves, as many did then?

Messing with the economy for quick fixes is just plain stupid and furthermore we decided to put our ENTIRE military and Navy in one spot known as Pearl Harbor which would lead to great consequences that we still haven't fully learned today.

    1. Pearl Harbor was allowed to happen on purpose, to give the United States an excuse to enter into World War II.

  43. No one can forget about the 9/11.It is still one of the most terrifying experience the world had witnessed. And the world should not stop believing that the government is doing everything so that it won't happen gain.

If you gave a damn about the Patriot Act you wouldn't worship Obama so much. He's killed citizens with drones and done everything with the Patriot Act that Bush did. His VP, Joe Biden is responsible for the Patriot Act's existence, writing it BEFORE 9/11 even happened. But since you love them, I guess you should love it too. It's unconstitutional but the President and VP you love are both huge supporters of it.
Obama declared war in Libya without even getting Congress's approval, which the Constitution requires.

    1. I blame the government in its ENTIRETY for the overreaches of the Patriot Act. Just because I can see the positive in our President certainly doesn't mean I worship him... no person/politician is perfect. Unfortunately the drone usage is the new culture in the military which I don't agree with under past, current or future administrations.

The next war may be waged by targeted assassinations; eg: little bits of explosives or poisons delivered by itty bittie swarmbots (for "terrorist enemies"). Surveillance and arrest here in US.
Obama means well. So did Bush. Obama's a better dancer.
Who's the perfect candidate for President? The best and brightest thousands will not run. Remember the fates of John and Robert Kennedy.

  45. In 1984 people(normal people) were so horrified about the idea of a television which watched you back to ensure your loyalty and to make sure you did not disobey their wish. Now they've given themselves unlimited power in surveillance and can go through your phone records read all your emails in order to supposedly fish out terrorists( 'spies' in 1984). In both cases they have been much more false convictions and overuse of force harming innocent people as well. Torture where the only real escape is to say what the investigator wants. Al Libbi gave false information so the torture would end. They used that lie to justify the Iraq war.

  46. John Mayer probably says it best, "we're still waiting, waiting for the world to change..." I think most 'anti-truthers' are not so much anti-truth as much as they intuitively translate the fear into inevitable hopelessness, a quality not very comforting or productive inside of the onslaught of keeping up with the Jones'. The one thing that always betrays the hidden truth are words. "The Patriot Act" is in fact doing what it says it wants to do, i.e. Act Against Patriots. So it is successful. Don't think that because it is called the Patriot Act it is designed to support Patriots. That would be illiteracy.

    1. Waiting Anonymous,

There's certainly too much convoluted naming in these bills. Another misnomer is Right to Work legislation which is nothing but Union Busting 101. The only "right" these bills give is the right to part-time work for substandard pay with no benefits. Yes, there is certainly nothing patriotic about the Patriot Act. A more truthful title would be the Big Brother Act.

  48. In the end the terrorists have one. They have caused us as American's to distrust everyone including our own people. We now don't know who the enemy is so we just spy on everyone. A paranoid society leads to distrust and the inability to work as a nation towards any goals because we now do not trust. The NSA has used technology as a easy way to root out the enemy although I question if they really have a grasp on who that enemy is.

    1. In creating this Society of Fear, the concept of community is being dissolved from all the distrust and dissent. Indeed, we've lost sight of who the enemy is. Thanks for the comment.

  49. Traditional narratives are good and bad, and are difficult to correct. As Napoleon once said, history is the tale of the victor. Today the narrative belongs to the state and those who control the state.
Not knowing, not questioning makes us fools because we don’t question the narrative. It is why we keep repeating injustice.. Having just read your blog immediately made me think of this piece. Thankyou for such an illuminating piece.

  50. Pearl Jam came out with an album titled "riot act" back in 2003. Took me a little while to realize it was about the Patriot act and most of what what you wrote about.
